This week I thought it would be interesting to hear your
opinions on the law that just passed through France's federal government. The
law will force supermarkets to donate all unsold food to those in need, instead
of throwing it away in the trash. It seems like a great idea to me, but I have
seen some good points being made such as the following:
"In most places in Europe and North America where this
"food waste" is a problem relative to hunger among the needy, it is
actually due to regulations in place against donating expired packaged foods
and/or or "day-old" fresh foods to shelters, food banks, and other
charities. It's not that food retailers just love throwing away perfectly
edible food and need to be forced by the government to do the right thing and
give it to the needy--it's that the government was previously making it very
hard or impossible for them to do so. Now in France they have changed from
standing in the way of the practice, to forcing the practice, and of course
they want to morally grandstand about having made a huge measure to feed the
needy as if it wouldn't have occurred otherwise."
